Artisan PURE SOAPS
Hand & Body Bar Soaps
My handmade bar soap is made by
combining natural fruit and vegetable
oils and butters with sodium
hydroxide and distilled water - but
how does this happen ...
Sodium Hydroxide (with the distilled water) helps to convert
fats and oils into soap by breaking down fat molecules and
creating a salt called “soap” that consists of fatty acid salts.
Sodium Hydroxide is an essential component of the chemical
reaction called saponification that takes place when soap is
produced.
This is the most important part of the soap-making process
and without it, the soap would not form correctly and would
not be effective for cleansing. Sodium hydroxide also helps to
thicken the soap and give it a better texture and consistency.
Following the saponification process, the oils or butters and
the hydroxide no longer exist in the finished product as they
have been chemically changed to glycerin and soap!
I use only four ingredients plus the relevant essential oils to
create my soap.
Olive oil is used for its antioxidant properties and Vitamin E
content, which are renowned for nourishing, cleansing,
moisturising and protecting skin against the signs of ageing.
Coconut oil contains Lauric, Capric, and Caprylic Acid –
These fatty acids from the coconut are antimicrobial agents.
In ‘plain English’ this means that they help fight against nasty
things like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and yeast.
Shea Nut butter is such a rich and effective moisturiser, and
is also high in skin nourishing vitamins, namely vitamins E, A
and C, all of which act as antioxidants to stop the negative
effects of harmful free radicals.
Castor oil is known for its natural antibacterial and anti-
fungal properties and is high in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins,
and Omega 6 and 9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high
ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair. It also
helps produce wonderful lather.
All my soaps have been approved and certified by
Cosmetic Safety Consultants Ltd.
